Botulinum Toxin

The human face has approximately 20 muscles which are responsible for facial expression and movement. Muscle movement pulls the overlying skin leading to creases. Youthful skin is elastic and can withstand this pull without the formation of wrinkles. However, over time as skin loses its elasticity, wrinkles develop.

Botulinum Toxin Overview

Botulinum toxin is one of the best treatments for wrinkles. The toxin weakens the underlying facial muscles so that they do not pull as strongly. Used appropriately, they are extremely safe and can prevent the formation of wrinkles or help wrinkles that have already formed soften. There are several formulations of botulinum toxins available today including Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. Of these Botox is the oldest and most well-known.
